Facebook Messenger users can now figure out where their friends are using a new app called Marauder’s Map.
The feature is a Google Chrome extension that determines a person’s location to within three feet. The scary part about Maurader’s Map is that you can find the location of non-friends if they are in a group chat with you and the user has not turned off location sharing.
“With this code you can see for yourself the potentially invasive usage of the information you share, and decide for yourself if this is something you should worry about,” wrote Aran Khanna, the Harvard student that created the extension.
Facebook Messenger has location sharing on by default, making Marauder’s Map that much scarier. However, you can shut this feature down by turning off the location icon on Messenger.
