Will the ‘Right to Be Forgotten’ on Google Go Global?

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) is facing pressure from a French watchdog group regarding its “right to be forgotten” program.

Right to Be Forgotten

This refers to a ruling that was made by the highest court in the EU in May 2014 that forced Google to remove links to personal information in its search results.

The company complied but the “right to be forgotten” program only applies to European versions of the search engines. France’s Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL) wants Google to roll it out across all versions of the search engine.

“In accordance with the CJEU [Court of Justice of the European Union] judgement, the CNIL considers that in order to be effective, delisting must be carried out on all extensions of the search engine,” the agency said in a statement.

The CNIL is giving Google 15 days to comply or the company will face a sanction.

GOOG stock is down 0.43% Friday. GOOGL stock is down 0.43%.
