A step-by-step look at what a can of Coca-Cola does to the body has been provided by former pharmacist Niraj Naik. Naik claims that the soft drink has negative effects on the body due to high fructose corn syrup, which the liver treats like the ethanol found in alcoholic drinks, reports Essential Kids.

Here’s a breakdown of what a can of Coca-Cola does to the body in an hour’s time, as provided by Essential Kids.

  • 10 Minutes — The consumer reaches their 100% daily intake of sugar.
  • 20 Minutes — The body goes through a sugar boost and the liver turns all of it that it can into fat.
  • 40 Minutes — Pupils dilate, blood pressure increases and the liver pumps more sugar into the bloodstream.
  • 45 Minutes — Dopamine levels increase in a way similar to what heroine does.
  • 60 Minutes — The phosphoric acid in the can of Coca-Cola binds to calcium, magnesium and zinc in the lower intestines.
  • After an Hour — The consumer has to urinate and flushes most the water from the soft drink, as well as many valuable nutrients, from their body.

Naik said that he quit his job as a pharmacist after overcoming an chronic auto-immune disease that he was told would keep him on certain medications his entire life. He now tries to help people taking long-term medications get off of them, The Blaze notes.
