Google and France’s CNIL are at odds over the Right to Be Forgotten. The CNIL has issued a formal notice to the tech company demanding that it remove links to content not only from European countries, but in all versions of the search engine.

Google argues that it shouldn’t have to do this because it could cause major conflicts. For example, the search giant notes that making the Right to Be Forgotten go global could result in a slew of links being removed due to the different laws in different countries. It says that this could really limit free speech on the internet.

Google is asking that the CNIL remove its formal notice.

“We have noted Google’s arguments, which are in part political. The CNIL for its part has relied only on legal reasoning,” a CNIL spokeswoman told USA Today. “There is no effectiveness if the right is applied only in Europe.”
