An American Airlines (AAL) pilot died while a plane was traveling to Boston.

american-airlines-pilot-dies-aalThe American Airlines flight was four hours into its flight from Phoenix to Boston when the pilot passed away. The first officer on the flight took over after the pilot’s death and made an emergency landing in Syracuse. The flight was delayed for four hours before taking flight again after replacing its crew, reports USA Today.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration requires that every commercial flight have two capable pilots on board just in case such a case occurs. First officers are just as capable of taking over the flight if the pilot dies or becomes unable to fly the plan for another reason. It’s unknown what exactly caused the pilot of the American Airlines flight to die while in air, USA Today notes.

Passengers aboard the American Airlines flight weren’t told why their plane had to stop in Syracuse when they landed. It wasn’t until a new crew was ready that they were told that the pilot of their flight had passed away, reports NBC News.
