Bluetooth 5 is an update to the core specifications of Bluetooth. The update means that some changes are coming to the wireless technology. Customers will benefit from these changes.

Bluetooth 5 makes it so that devices will be able to work over longer ranges, faster speeds and larger broadcast message capacity. It also allows the technology to better work with other wireless technologies.

According to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, Bluetooth 5 offers four times the range, double the speed and eight times the broadcast message capacity. The changes to it also reduce interference with other wireless devices. This was done in an effort to strengthen its ability to work with Internet of Things appliances.

“This means whole-home and building coverage, as well as new use cases for outdoor, industrial, and commercial applications will be a reality,” Mark Powell, Executive Directo of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, said in a statement. “With the launch of Bluetooth 5, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of IoT developers and consumers while staying true to what Bluetooth is at its core: the global wireless standard for simple, secure, connectivity.”

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group says that it expects devices with Bluetooth 5 to start showing up in the next two to six months. It also expects that one third of the estimated 48 billion Internet of Things devices that will be installed by 2021 will include Bluetooth technology.
