Monday’s Apple Rumors — Android Approaching

Here are your Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) news items and rumors for Monday:

Android Ahead: While the Samsung Galaxy Tab didn’t come close to matching the iPad’s sales last Christmas — Apple’s device outsold Samsung’s tablet by nearly 6 to 1 — Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system made significant headway in the tablet market, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. In a Monday report, the firm said Apple’s iPad had a 75.4% percent share of the tablet market in the fourth quarter of 2010, while Android tablets took a 21.6% market share.

More importantly, Apple’s share fell from 95.5% in the third quarter, while Android surged from a 2.3% share. The numbers are based on the number of tablets shipped to retailers around the world and not sales, so investors shouldn’t expect to hear dramatic sales number not already reported. The data does demonstrate, however, that the tablet retail world is diversifying quickly. Whether that will translate to a market not as heavily dominated by the iPad will be determined when competing devices like the Motorola (NYSE:MMI) Xoom and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) PlayBook come out later this year.

5 Million Made: A new report from Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPad 2 will have an improved screen that is as much as 35% thinner and less reflective than the current model, but it will have the same 1024 x 768 resolution as the original iPad. He also says the iPad 2 will indeed sport CDMA and GSM 3G support, as well as the previously rumored front and rear cameras. Foxconn also will make between 4.5 million and 5 million iPad 2 tablets between now and April, with the device available to consumers by May.

White iPhone 4 Coming: In an interview with tech blog Engadget, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak confirmed that the long-delayed white iPhone 4 will finally be shipping out in the near future. Leaks from a variety of sources, including Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) product pages and AT&T’s (NYSE:T) customer service website, have indicated that the new color would finally be available for purchase. The white iPhone was delayed multiple times last summer due to several materials issues.

As of this writing, Anthony John Agnello did not own a position in any of the stocks named here.
