BMW Drives Higher As Real America Index Skids

South Carolina’s BMW (PINK:BAMXF) is roaring up 2.5% today, partly on a magazine report that the company plans to sell 2 million cars annually by 2016.  The stock may be reacting to news the company plans to eliminate union jobs in California, saving it tons of money.

BMW is the best-performing stock on the InvestorPlace.com Real America Index today. Other top performers in the index:

Montana’s Stillwater Mining (NYSE:SWC) can’t decide which end is up, and it moved 1.2% higher today, following yesterday’s plunge.   Inexplicably, the stock is up while precious metal prices are down.  Welcome to the wacky world of precious metal investing.

Wyoming’s Double Eagle Petroleum (NASDAQ: DBLE) is up nearly 1%, again bucking the counterrend of falling oil prices.  There are just some days where commodity-based businesses just don’t move lock-step with their underlying asset base.  Combined with Stillwater’s mysterious move, it’s a lesson in commodity investment.

Several stocks are getting whalloped in the Real America Index today:

Vermont’s Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR) is down 2% today, as Forbes magazine highlighted a balance sheet discrepancy.  On the heels of an SEC query regarding accounting issues last November, investors may be showing concern about the company’s financial statements.

Hawaii’s

Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ: HA) is down 3.4% today.  There’s no obvious news, although on Wednesday the company debunked an AP report that its Manila-routed planes required major maintenance.

Idaho’s Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) is being chipped for a 13% loss, on weak earnings that fell short of analyst’s hopes.  Orders are slowing, and prices of DRAM memory is falling.  Bad news all around.

Looking at the broad perspective, the Real America Index is down almost 1%, as are the other three major indexes.
