New Book Says iOS Lead is Apple “CEO-in-Waiting”: Former Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook took over as CEO following Steve Jobs’ resignation in August 2011, but after just a few months there are hints that the company has already laid out an alternate succession plan. Adam Lashinsky of Fortune magazine has published an unauthorized look at the Cupertino, Calif., company’s inner workings. Details from the book reprinted by Fortune on Tuesday claim that Scott Forstall, 43-year-old head of Apple’s mobile software division–the team behind iOS, the popular operating system running the iPhone and iPad, and that generates a huge portion of Apple’s income–is next in line to captain the good ship Apple. Lashinsky wrote that Forstall strikes the same balance between creativity and ruthless business sense Jobs embodied so well.

Apple to Announce e-Book Creation Tool at Thursday Event: A Monday report at Ars Technica claims that Apple will be announcing more than just new plans in the textbook business at its media event scheduled for Thursday. An unnamed source has indicated that Apple will also announce a new app that will function like “GarageBand for e-books,” letting independent authors and publishers create digital publications as simply as that app does a song. Inkling CEO and former Apple employee Matt MacInnis said that Apple’s history with other digital media, like music and movies, indicates that this is a likely plan. Apple is not in the business of publishing its own music and movies, just controlling distribution channels like iTunes and content creation tools like GarageBand. A simple tool to help potential customers create e-books for sale in the iBookstore is all too likely.

Apple Resumes Attempt to Block Sale of Samsung Devices in Germany: With 2012 well underway, Apple has renewed its efforts to block the sale of Samsung (PINK:SSNLF) smartphones and tablets around the world, claiming the Korean company’s goods impinge on patents held by Apple. The latest suit filed against Samsung seeks to block its Galaxy S Plus, S II, and eight other smartphone models from sale in Germany, according to a report posted Tuesday by Bloomberg. Samsung won a key victory against Apple in Germany when a judge shot down a proposed Apple injunction to block the Galaxy Tab 10.1N from sale in the country. Apple had successfully blocked the previous model, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, from German shelves earlier in 2011.
