Toyota TMToyota (NYSE:TM) announced on Wednesday that it is recalling almost a million Corollas after receiving reports of two car crashes and other injuries linked to defective airbags, and almost 400,000 Lexus vehicles for malfunctioning windshield wipers.

An improperly functioning sensor in 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars produced between December 2001 and 2004 and sold in the U.S., could cause the airbags to suddenly inflate. Thousands of other Corollas sold in Canada, Japan and Mexico are also covered by the recall, the Associated Press noted.

Toyota noted that it had received a total of 46 reports of airbag malfunctions from the U.S. and confirmed 18 cases of injuries, mostly abrasions, resulting from the improperly inflating airbags. It had not yet confirmed whether the crashes had resulted from the defective air bags.

The company is also recalling 385,000 Lexus IS models sold around the world, including 270,000 vehicles in the U.S., over windshield wipers that fail in snowy conditions. Lexus IS vehicles covered by the recall were made between May 2005 and October 2011.

Over the past year, Toyota has issued a number of recalls, including 2.77 million vehicles around the world in November due to defective steering systems and water pumps.

In December, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined the Japanese auto giant $17.4 million, the largest amount legally permissible, for failing to notify regulators of problems with its vehicles in a timely fashion.

Despite news of the latest recall, Toyota shares rose fractionally in Wednesday morning trading.
