PlayStation Fans Outraged Over Restrictions on Used Games

The company has not revealed its plans for DRM technology


sony playstation 4 630A report suggesting that Sony (SNE) plans to adopt a digital rights management (DRM) system to clamp down on used games on its upcoming console has prompted gaming fans to express their anger on social media outlets.

Sony is preparing to launch its next-generation gaming console, the Playstation 4.  Spooked by the DRM report, Playstation fans have barraged Sony with a no-DRM campaign via Twitter and an online petition, GameZone noted.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant has not yet officially said whether the Playstation 4’s will be able to play used games, or if there will be any restrictions. A few executives did respond to the growing Twitter protest. One senior executive tweeted that he was “humbled” by the fans’ ardor, adding “please know that we hear you.”

Rival Microsoft (MSFT) has already unveiled its own new console, the Xbox One, which has been the subject of conflicting rumors about DRM technology and possible additional fees for playing used games.

Shares of Sony fell more than 3% in Wednesday morning trading.
