EBay announced that it is asking its users to change their passwords today due to a cyber attack that has compromised its databases.

Strangely, the company then deleted the EBay password announcement — with no explanation as to why.

The company reported that as of now, there was “no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats.”

“However,” the company stated, “changing passwords is a best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users.”

What is worrisome, though, is that the hack — which reportedly took place in late February or early March included eBay customers’ name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth.

EBay said it is currently working with police and other security experts to investigate the hack.

Oddly, there was reported confusion over how EBay was issuing notice of the cyberattack. (via the Chicago Tribune)

EBay Inc earlier issued a notice on its PayPal website asking users to change their passwords, but took down the message a short time later without explanation.

The message headline, issued at 1:30 a.m. ET (0630 GMT), was “eBay Inc. To Ask All eBay Users To Change Passwords” but had no other information other than the words “place holder text”.

EBay has not yet commented on the discrepancy, but users are already flooding the site to change their passwords.

EBay stock is down 1.5% on news of the hack.
