One woman is suing Facebook (FB) for $123 million over a revenge porn page set up in her name.
Meryam Ali claims that one of her former friends set up a page on Facebook using her name and that it included pictures of naked women that had her face edited on their bodies. The lawsuit includes this former friend, Adeel Shah Khan, and it’s seeking a dime in damages for each of the 1.23 million users of the social media website, Huffington Post notes.
Ali claims that she contacted Facebook when she learned of the fake account in her name in December, but that the social media giant didn’t take the page down. Allegedly, the profile wasn’t removed until police subpoenaed the company in an effort to learn who the creator of the page was, Huffington Post notes.
The lawsuit against Facebook isn’t just seeking monetary reimbursement, it also want to “expose the frailties and failures of the falsely advertised, and false promoted privacy mechanisms” that the website has. It claims that higher ups at the social media company know about the trouble it has with privacy, but that they work to conceal these issues, reports Salon.
