What is Ello?
A new social media site that labels itself as an ad-free, user-friendly network is here. Ello is currently in beta testing but Internet users are already drooling over the prospect of a bare-bones social network.
Paul Budnitz came up with the idea for Ello after being disillusioned by the other networks which he calls “advertising platforms.” He also denounces the lack of privacy offered on these sites.
“My partners and I had lost interest and were fed up with other social networks — exhausted by ads, clutter, and feeling manipulated and deceived by companies that clearly don’t have our interests at heart,” Budnitz said.
He added that Ello was a private social network at first with about 100 close friends and artists. Interest grew and Budnitz decided to expand the network since its servers were unable to handle the demand.
Ello is invite-only for now but you can request to join by emailing the site. You can also check out some of the network’s profiles here.
