Sweet Briar College’s board of directors called for a vote to shut down the private art school late last year. The voting occurred on Feb. 28 with a unanimous decision for the school to close. The board cited financial reasons for the decision to close the school. The current focus of the institute is to help find new colleges and universities for its 700 students to attend, reports USA Today.

Sweet Briar College President James F. Jones Jr. said that less students are willing to attend a rural private arts school in today’s society. The college campus is located near Lynchburg, Va. He also said that less women were willing to attend an all-female school, USA Today notes.

Following news of the summer closing for Sweet Briar College, several people took to Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) and used the hashtag #SaveSweetBriar in an effort to save the school. A website was also opened up with a fundraising goal of $250 million to help keep the school open, reports Washington Post.
