Running late on filing your taxes? A tax extension may be just what you need.
Here are the three different ways to file a tax extension.
- Form 4868, the forum for a tax extension can be filed with a partial or complete payment of estimated taxes for 2014.
- A paper Form 4868 can be filed.
- Form 4868 can also be filed electronically via the IRS’ e-file system.
Form 4868 extends the amount of time a person has to file taxes by six months. However, it does not extend the due date for estimated tax liability. If a person doesn’t pay their estimated tax liability, then they can be hit with interest and penalties.
Those looking to file Form 4868 must do so by the normal due date for taxes, which is April 15. If filed, the IRS will only contact a person about the form if their request is denied.
