The NFL will be getting its first full-time female official in Sarah Thomas this year.
Sarah Thomas has yet to be officially announced as hired by the NFL, but she will have the job. She almost made the cut for last year’s season and was one of the organization’s 21 finalists after working as an official for college football and the United Football League, reports Bleacher Report.
Sarah Thomas’ first game working as an official was in 1999. The game was high-school level. She’s never played football at any level, which made it hard for her to learn the sport, Bleacher Report notes.
“If I am there permanently next year as a full-time official it would just be tremendous,” Sarah Thomas told The News Journal in 2013. “I’ve always said as far as breaking the gender barrier, you never set out to do that.”
