5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

For the week, the worst sectors according to Portfolio Grader are the energy services, marine, construction and engineering, distributors and electrical equipment sectors.

The energy services sector is lagging this week with 91% of its stocks (50 out of 55) rated a “sell”. Out of the energy services stocks, CARBO Ceramics (CRR), Tidewater (TDW) and Transocean (RIG) are near the bottom with F’s. Overall, CARBO Ceramics is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 70.7% in the last 12 months.

The marine sector is dragging, with 75% of its stocks (6 out of 8) rated a “sell”. With an overall grade of F, Golden Ocean Group Ltd (GOGL), Seaspan Corporation (SSW) and Kirby Corporation (KEX) are weighing down the sector.

With 67% of its stocks (14 out of 21) rated “sell,” the construction and engineering sector is struggling this week. Among construction and engineering stocks, Empresas ICA SAB de CV Sponsored ADR (ICA), KBR, Inc. (KBR) and Jacobs Engineering Group (JEC) are lingering near the bottom with grades of F. Over the last 12 months, Empresas ICA SAB de CV Sponsored ADR is the worst performer in this sector, with a 38.3% decline.

The distributors sector is trailing behind others this week, with 60% of its stocks (15 out of 25) rated a “sell”. Out of the distributors stocks, Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. (BECN) and NOW Inc (DNOW) are at the bottom with F’s. WESCO International, Inc. (WCC) also has a weak D.

The electrical equipment sector looks weak, with 59% of its stocks (16 out of 27) rated a “sell”. General Cable Corporation (BGC), GrafTech International Ltd (GTI) and Encore Wire Corporation (WIRE) are pushing the sector down with F grades. The worst performer in this sector is GrafTech International Ltd, which saw its price sink 60.6% in the last 12 months.
