Hackers are capable of taking over Nissan Leaf vehicles through a vulnerability in the electric car’s technology.
The heating and air-conditioning systems in Nissan Leafs can be hijacked, announces a prominent security researcher. Troy Hunt added that data on the drivers’ recent journey could also be spied on.
The security firm was given a month to fix the issue before making it public. Nissan announced that the hackers pose no safety threat on the vehicle’s companion app.
Nissan Leaf owners can protect themselves by disabling their Nissan CarWings account. The issue is not life-threatening, but hackers could use the vulnerability to run down people’s batteries.
“The right thing to do at the moment would be for Nissan to turn it off altogether,” Mr Hunt told the BBC. “It’s not that they have done authorisation [on the app] badly, they just haven’t done it at all, which is bizarre.”
A spokeswoman for Nissan said the company is working on fixing the problem.”Our global technology and product teams are currently working on a permanent and robust solution.”
It was recently revealed that Spotify Premium subscribers were hacked.
