Here’s everything you need to know about the new Hero 6 Black, GoPro Fusion and everything else announced at the GoPro event.

Hero 6 Black

GoPro hasn’t been very successful at keeping the lid on its new Hero 6 Black action camera. There have even been leaks of the new GoPro camera complete in retail packaging!

Brad Moon has been writing for InvestorPlace.com since 2012. He also writes about stocks for Kiplinger and has been a senior contributor focusing on consumer technology for Forbes since 2015.

Today, the leaked details became official.

Hero 6 Black Key Specs:

  • 4K Ultra HD video at 60fps
  • 1080p (Full HD) video at 240 fps
  • 12MP photos with 30 fps burst mode
  • HDR and RAW photo support
  • Advanced image stabilization
  • New GP1 custom image processing chip
  • Updated voice control
  • Faster Wi-Fi connectivity
  • 2-inch touch display
  • 3 microphones with active wind noise reduction
  • Waterproof to 33 feet without need for an enclosure
  • Fast-charge compatible
  • Compatible with existing GoPro accessories and mounts

The Hero 6 Black is priced at $499, and is available now, online and in retailers.

The upgrades over the Hero 5 are significant, but the bigger news — at least from an investor standpoint — is the GP1 custom chip. GoPro developed its own image processing chip for the Hero 6 Black and the customization gives the company an advantage over competitors like Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN).

That ability to tweak the silicon to enhance performance is a strategy used by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) with its iPhone. It should allow GoPro to follow a similar path of being able to beat off-the-shelf components, retain an edge over competitors and charge a premium for its products.

GoPro Fusion

The Hero 6 Black wasn’t the only new GoPro camera to be announced today. The GoPro Fusion is a 360-degree VR camera with overcapture (an advanced visual effect). Select GoPro customers have been using the Fusion over the summer as part of a pilot project, but the company is now making it an official, consumer product.

Priced at $699, the new GoPro Fusion is available for pre-order now, with shipment starting in November.

Karma Drone News

After a rocky start including an embarrassing recall that slammed GPRO stock, the Karma drone has had a much better 2017, placing a solid second behind market leader DJI in U.S. drone sales. Today, it was announced that Karma gets new follow me and look up features via a software update

GoPro says that unlike last year, the new GoPro flagship camera should be readily available over the holiday shopping season. Major retailers already have stock on hand, and the new Fusion VR is shipping in November. That’s good news for GPRO stock, which took a major hit when manufacturing snafus meant new GoPro hardware was difficult to find last December.

As of this writing, Brad Moon did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
