This painting from Leonardo da Vinci is the Salvator Mundi. It is the last painting of the artist’s to ever be discovered. The painting was found in 2007 and was revealed to the public in 2011 after the restoration process was complete.

Prior to the discovery of the Salvator Mundi, the last discovered painting by Leonardo da Vinci was the Benois Madonna found in 1909. It is believed that there are only about 20 paintings from the artists that still exist today.

The Salvator Mundi 

has made its way around the world and was largely passed off as a copy painting from one of Leonardo da Vinci’s students. However, a closer examination of the painting during its restoration revealed the truth of its origin.

The Christie’s auction house in New York will be selling the Salvator Mundi. The auction for the piece of work from Leonardo da Vinci will take place on Nov. 15, 2017.

“The opportunity to bring this masterpiece to the market is an honour that comes around once in a lifetime,” Loic Gouzer, Chairman of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s in New York, said in a statement. “Despite being created approximately 500 years ago, the work of Leonardo is just as influential to the art that is being created today as it was in the 15th and 16th centuries.”

Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci features Jesus Christ holding an orb of the world while wearing blue robes. It is believed that the painting was created in either the late 1490s or early 1500s.
