Sony (NYSE:SNE) confirms that it is working on a next-gen gaming console, but doesn’t say if it is the PlayStation 5.

A recent interview from Sony’s Kenichiro Yoshida has him mentioning that developing a next-gen gaming console is important to the company. However, he never specifically refers to the device as the PlayStation 5.

This has some wondering if the PlayStation 5 will really be the company’s next-gen gaming console. Sony could instead switch up the naming convention to give the device line a fresh image. Nintendo (OTCMKTS:NTDOY) already does this with its brand of video game consoles, as does Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) with the Xbox line.

There’s also been talk that the PlayStation 5 could be a departure from the typical gaming console. This would make sense as the market is changing. Nintendo already has a home/portable gaming console hybrid with the Switch and MSFT is launching a game streaming service, reports Forbes.

Basically, we know that Sony is working on making a console for the next generation of gaming, but that’s really about it. We still don’t know what exactly the device will do, when it will come out, or if it will even be called the PlayStation 5.

Even if it isn’t called the PlayStation 5, there have been some interesting rumors swirling about Sony’s next console. This includes recent patents detailing a process of remastering games by emulation.

This patent speaks about a system that would allow for older titles to come out with better textures via emulation. This has some people talking about this as a form of backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 5. That would be a departure from the PlayStation 4, which isn’t backwards compatible with games from previous console generations.
