Weight Watchers (WTW) Founder Jean Nidetch Dies at 91

Weight Watchers International, Inc. (NYSE:WTW) founder Jean Nidetch has passed away.

weight-watchers-jean-nidetch-wtwJean Nidetch passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday at her home in Parkland, Fla. She founded Weight Watchers in 1963 with two friends and her husband, all of whom were overweight. Nidetch was 214 and struggled with losing weight, but finally committed to doing so in 1961 and lost 72 pounds, reports The New York Times.

“We ourselves hold the instrument that makes us fat,” Jean Nidetch said in a 2011 interview, NYT notes.”I just shake my head when I see someone eating cake and saying, ‘Oh, I wish I wasn’t heavy.’ But they keep eating the cake!”

Jean Nidetch once described herself as “just another former fat housewife.” When she was asked in 2011 if she had any advice for people trying to lose weight, she responded with “Drop the damn fork!”, reports The Los Angeles Times.
