An Amtrak train travelling through Philadelphia crashed on Tuesday night.
The Amtrak crash occurred in the Port Richmond area of Philadelphia at around 9:30 p.m. The crash sent more than 200 people to local hospitals and resulted in six deaths. Eight passengers are currently in critical condition and authorities believe there could be more victims still at the crash site, reports CNN.
The train involved in the Philadelphia Amtrak crash was Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188. It held a total of 238 passengers and five crew. The train was heading to New York City from Washington D.C. when the crash happened. All seven cars and the engine derailed in the incident, CNN notes.
“The Northeast Corridor is a frequent travel route for millions of Americans,” Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey told The New York Times. “It’s critical that we do all we can to assess the results of the investigation into this crash and take appropriate steps to prevent derailments in the future.”
