Why Twitter Is Removing Background Images From User Profiles

Twitter (TWTR) is removing background images from users’ profiles due to a recent change.

The change makes it so that users can now longer have background images appear on their Home or Timeline. However, backgrounds will still appear on “Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages.” The new background that all users have are pure white, reports Mashable.

Twitter started making these changes to select profiles last year. Users can still customize their backgrounds via the “Design” option in “Settings”, but it won’t change that pure white that appears on most of the website, Mashable notes.

The exact reason that Twitter decided to remove background images is unknown. However, some believe that it may be the company preparing to introduce more ads to the website, reports Adweek.

Twitter users weren’t happy about the changes made to their background images and

voiced their frustrations via the social media service.

  • “Gdi twitter please let us have backgrounds back or at least use something less blinding than white. Blue is fine!”
  • “The thing I hate about this new @Twitter update removing the backgrounds is that I can no longer easily tell which account I’m on. :/”
  • “Didn’t realize how much the color white offended people till @Twitter turned off background images.”
  • “If Twitter is getting rid of custom backgrounds then I really have no reason to use Twitter on my desktop, it’s just too annoying to look at.”
  • “Twitter’s being a jerk and taking away backgrounds.”
