The Pacific Northwest could face a huge earthquake in the next 50 years.
Scientists claim that there are two tectonic plates that are currently building up pressure and rubbing against each other under the Pacific Ocean. There’s a one in three possibility that the earthquake they could create will occur in the next 50 years and that it could do massive damage to the Pacific Northwest, reports AOL.
It’s possible that the damage caused by the massive Pacific Northwest earthquake could result in the edge of the continent dropping 30 feet, power grids being destroyed and a 700-mile tsunami hitting the West Coast. This would result in an estimated 13,000 death, 1 million homeless people and 2 million people that would need food and water provided to them, AOL notes.
Efforts to create an early warning system for earthquakes is currently being worked on in Washington. However, the device still sends out false alarms and isn’t accurate enough to be used. There’s some dispute over the estimated damage the Pacific Northwest earthquake could cause, with some saying it won’t be near as bad as the above predictions claims, reports The Seattle Times.
