Steve Jobs hated the idea of a 7-inch iPad. But his successor may not.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is preparing to release a smaller version of its market-dominating tablet in October, according to iMore.com.

Citing an unnamed source, iMore says that the 7-inch iPad will be priced between $200 and $250, which would aim it squarely at rivals, including Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Fire.

The new iPad reportedly features a 2048×1526 pixel display similar to that found it the 10-inch iPad, but featuring higher pixel density due to the reduced screen space.

In order to keep costs down, Apple will cut the amount of internal storage to 8GB, compared to a basic 16GB on the 10-inch iPad.

Aside from Amazon, other mobile device manufacturers including, Samsung currently offer tablets with 7-inch screens.

Rumors of a smaller iPad have been circulating for months and most recently among Taiwanese sources.

Apple has not publicly indicated any plans to release a smaller iPad.
