Microsoft MSFTIs Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) moving forward with its own smartphone project? Sources in Asia claim that testing is underway on various components for the device.

Microsoft is currently working with Nokia (NYSE:NOK), Samsung and HTC with the Windows phone operating system for smartphones, and CEO Steve Ballmer had no comment other than to say the firm is happy with its current partners.

Nevertheless, one  supplier says the tests are being conducted on a system with a screen between four and five inches. That would roughly match the latest smartphones from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung. The supplier continued that no decision on whether to go ahead with the product had been made.

If Microsoft does go forward with its own smartphone, it will be another sign that the firm is preparing a new direction in which it becomes a device manufacturer in addition to its traditional role of simply supplying software for other companies’ devices. The recent launch of Microsoft’s Surface table is another sign that it’s changing its basic approach to business.
