Already?: It’s been less than two months since Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) released the iPhone 5. Now, DigiTimes reports that the company is gearing up to make the iPhone 5’s successor. According to the report, Apple is concerned over production problems that have constrained iPhone 5 supplies and is thus moving to get trial production started on the iPhone 5S. Volume production on the new iPhone could begin in the first quarter of next year, suggesting a possible consumer release in June or July. Apple is also allegedly preparing to launch an new version of the iPad sometime next year. Apple introduced its fourth-generation iPad last month along with its new iPad Mini.

Patent Truce: Apple has negotiated a patent licensing deal with handset maker HTC that will bring in as much as $280 million in 2013 revenue, CNET notes. The deal between the companies will end current patent infringement lawsuits. A Sterne Agee analyst says that the agreement means that Apple will receive between $6 and $8 in licensing fees for each HTC smartphone shipped next year, amounting to between $180 million and $280 million in fee revenue for the year. The joint patent licensing deal runs for 10 years. Some analysts believe the agreement with HTC could provide a blueprint for Apple to negotiate settlements of its current patent infringement suits with Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Motorola division and Samsung.

Jury Scruitiny: The California judge that presided over Apple’s $1 billion patent victory against Samsung will review the jury foreman’s conduct, PC World notes. Samsung has appealed the decision, claiming that the jury foreman withheld material information during the voir dire process. The foreman did not disclose that he had been sued by Seagate, the hard drive manufacturer, for breach of contract and failure to repay a loan in 1993. Since Samsung has a partnership with Seagate, Samsung claims the foreman was biased against the company and may have influenced the jury. The judge also said she would examine claims that Apple knew about the foreman’s past.
