Cheaper Version: Apple will debut an inexpensive version of the iPhone for sale in developing markets and China in the second half of this year, DigiTimes says. Rumors of a cheaper iPhone, possibly with a smaller screen, have been circulating for some time. However, DigiTimes says that the cheaper iPhone will in fact have a larger screen and completely new exterior styling compared to existing iPhones. Inexpensive smartphones running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) operating system have been popular in emerging markets, boosting Android’s share of the global smartphone market to more than 70%. The recent success of the iPad Mini, particularly in China, may have convinced Apple that a less expensive version of the iPhone would improve its market share overseas.

Holiday Boost: AT&T (NYSE:T) said it sold a record 10 million smartphones during the fourth quarter of last year, with most of those expected to be iPhones, AppleInsider said. In 2011, AT&T sold 9.4 million smartphones, of which 7.6 million were iPhones. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates that AT&T sold 8.1 million iPhones during the final quarter of the year. He is predicting 21% year-over-year growth in iPhone sales, compared to 35% growth in overall smartphone sales compared to last year. Munster expects Apple to have sold 45 million iPhones during the final quarter of 2012.

App Revenue: When Apple’s App Store users download an average paid app, its developers make 17.5 cents, Forbes estimates. Apple recently announced that users have download 40 billion apps since the App Store launched four years ago, with 20 billion apps having been downloaded last year alone. Over the course of its time in the App Store, the average app earns about $9,000 for its developers, Forbes calculates. Still, that average is affected by a small number of apps that make a millions of dollars in downloads, while the vast majority of apps never make any money at all. A significant number of apps in the App Store can also be downloaded free of charge.
