- When is it celebrated? Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of the birth of our first president, George Washington. He was born on February 22 but President’s Day 2014 will take place on Monday, February 17.
- How did it become a holiday? Presidents Day’s official title is George Washington’s Birthday and it became a holiday in 1879. The Act of Congress created it for government offices in Washington and expanded it in 1885 to include all federal offices. It was originally celebrated on February 22 but it was changed to the third Monday in February in 1971.
- What’s closed on President’s Day? Banks, post offices and many local businesses will be closed on Presidents Day 2014. Other businesses will have shortened hours while Walmart (WMT) and other big retailers will stay open. Some schools cancel classes on Presidents Day.
