According to ICANN, it was the target of a “spear phishing” attack. The attack had emails that claimed to be from the company sent to employees. Employees that clicked on a link in the email were taken to a fake website and their passwords and usernames were stolen when they tried to use it to log in.

The ICANN hack was discovered by the group earlier this month. Included in the information that was compromised by the hackers was the group’s Centralized Zone Data System. This resulted in some users of the service having their names, postal addresses, email addresses, fax and telephone numbers, usernames, and passwords stolen. The passwords were encrypted, but ICANN is still having users create new ones.

Other parts of ICANN that were compromised during the hack include ICANN GAC Wiki, Blog and WHOIS portal. No vital information was lost in these areas.
