WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook (FB), has reached 700 million active users.
WhatsApp had 600 million active users in August 2014. The messaging service sees 30 billion messages a day sent via it and has a larger audience than both Instagram and Twitter. However, Facebook still stays ahead of it with 1.3 billion active users, reports Cnet.
Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that he doesn’t plan to make money off of the messaging service until it reaches 1 billion users. He’s told the team behind the messenger to run at a break-even level until then, Cnet notes.
WhatsApp is free to use for the first year. After this, users will have to pay 99 cents a year to use the service, reports AppAdvice.
FB shares were up slightly as of Wednesday afternoon.
