Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) delivery drones have been approved for outside testing by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

While Amazon delivery drones have been given the green light for testing by the FAA, it isn’t as great of a victory as it seems. The FAA has placed some very strict limitations on what the company can do in its test.

Here are the limitations that testing for Amazon delivery drones face.

  • The drones must be operated by a person with at least a private pilot’s certificate.
  • The pilot must also be a holder of an up-to-date medical certification.
  • The drones aren’t allowed to fly above 400 feet.
  • Amazon delivery drones can’t leave a pilot’s line of sight.
  • The company must report data to the FAA on a monthly basis.

Amazon delivery drones were dealt another blow in February when the FAA passed new guidelines for operating the devices. This included not letting them be flown over top of anyone but the operator.

While the Amazon delivery drones are severely limited in use in the United States, this hasn’t stopped the company from moving forward with plans in other countries. It was working to start drone deliveries in the UK last year and was also rumored to be looking at tests in India.

AMZN shares were up 1% as of Friday afternoon.
