Starbucks ended this part of its Race Together campaign following much criticism. However, the coffee chain claims that the campaign will continue on in forum discussions. It also said part of the campaign will have it opening stores in more racially diverse areas, reports the Associated Press.

“While there has been criticism of the initiative — and I know this hasn’t been easy for any of you — let me assure you that we didn’t expect universal praise,” Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said in a letter to employees obtained by the Associated Press.

The Starbucks’ Race Together campaign started last week and was designed to promote talk of race relations in the United States. Employees weren’t forced to write the messages on cups and customers could also request cups without the message.

Following the start of the Starbucks Race Together campaign, the company was ridiculed by many users on social media. Several Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) users took advantage of the #RaceTogether hashtag to mock the company.
