Cinco de Mayo is only a few days away.
While most people look forward to the holiday because of the celebrations, there is also plenty of rich history behind it.
Here are five things to know about Cinco de Mayo:
- The date honors the Mexican army’s improbable victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
- The French army was considered to be the strongest army in the world and they sent 6,000 soldiers to face 2,000 Mexican soldiers.
- The Mexican army was led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.
- The victory served as a moral boost for the Mexicans, propelling the resistance movement.
- No country in the Americas has been invaded by any other European military force since the Battle of Puebla.
