News that the Google self-driving car would make its way to public roads was announced by the company via its blog on Friday. The post states that several prototypes will be driving around Mountain View, Calif., with safety drivers riding shotgun.

The Google self-driving car prototypes will be using the same system that the company employs in its Lexus RX450h SUV fleet. These cars punch in about 10,000 miles a week and have what’s worth roughly 75 year of driving experience in America.

When the Google self-driving car makes it debut on public roads, it will have a speed limit of 25mph. Safety drivers that ride along with the vehicle will have a removable steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal in case of emergencies.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) recently announced that new Model S sedans will come equipped with the ability to pass other cars on their own. This feature will have to be activiated by the driver before it goes into effect.

Hyundai is also moving forward with plans for a self-driving car and expects to have them ready for sale by 2030.

Daimler, a German company, has also released a self-driving truck that has been approved for use in Nevada.
