Grooveshark, a free music streaming service, shut down on April 30.

groovesharkGrooveshark announced its shutdown on its official page. The music streaming service said it shut down as part of a settlement agreement with major record companies. The service started 10 years ago with the intention of giving people a place to share and discover music.

The official message from Grooveshark says that it made some very serious mistakes while still running. Included in these mistakes was not obtaining licenses from record companies for music that was on its service. The company apologized for this and encouraged users to find a new, legal music streaming service.

Grooveshark’s final message recommends that users try Spotify, Google Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Play, Deezer, Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Beats Music, Rhapsody and Rdio out in their search for new music streaming services.
