The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has suggested that the new carry-on size standard should be “55cm x 35cm x 20cm”. This is a 39% reduction from the current 56cm x 45cm x 25 cm. The organization said that 30 to 40 airlines are interested in the new sizes, reports Quartz.

IATA proposed carry-on size is part of its “Cabin OK” program. This program looks to offer certification for luggage that meets the proposed standards. This could lead to luggage being marked as such an passengers knowing that their bag will qualify as a carry on. However, this could result in more luggage fees for travelers that need to carry more, reports Quartz.

The newly proposed carry-on size is only a recommendation. Currently, the three largest airlines in the United States, American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Airlines (UAL), allow for larger bags. This could change though as airlines look to fit more luggage on planes, reports USA Today.
