Verizon (VZ) customers with unlimited data plans are going to start seeing extra charges.

verizon-unlimited-data-vzVerizon customers that are grandfathered into unlimited data plans will start paying an additional $20 a month starting on Nov. 15. Less than 1% of customers have unlimited data through VZ and some won’t see the price hike until their contract with the wireless carrier expires, reports Cnet.

Verizon suggests that it may be more beneficial for some customers to switch off of the unlimited data plans following the price hike. One change that benefits customers with unlimited data plans is that they can now take part in monthly installment plans for new smartphones. Prior to this, these customers had to pay full price for their new phones, Cnet notes.

Verizon said that it will use the extra money from increasing the price of unlimited data plans to strengthen its network. The company says that the increased price is worth it because it gives customers access to its network, which it claims is more reliable than other wireless carriers’ networks, reports CNNMoney.
