The NHTSA said in a letter that Google driverless cars could be considered to have a driver if it ruled that the computer was the driver. This letter was in response a self-driving car design submitted on Nov. 12, reports Reuters.

While the letter is a good step for Google driverless cars, the NHTSA also said that the company had a ways to go before its designs met current standards. Many safety requirements are getting in the way of a true driverless car being released.

Late last year it was reported that the tech company was in talks with Ford (F) to help it develop its Google driverless cars.
