Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) has been ordered to pay $55 million in a talc-powder cancer case.
The order has Johnson & Johnson paying $5 million in damages and $50 million in punitive damages to Gloria Ristesund, who claims she developed ovarian cancer due to the talc powder from its products. Her cancer is currently in remission.
JNJ is appealing the court’s decision, but there are several other lawsuits from women claiming the company’s talc-power products gave them ovarian cancer. A similar case earlier this year had the judge ordering the company to pay the family of a deceased woman $72 million, reports USA Today.
“Multiple scientific and regulatory reviews have determined that talc is safe for use in cosmetic products and the labeling on Johnson’s Baby Powder is appropriate,” Carol Goodrich, a Johnson & Johnson spokesperson, told kfor.com.
