New Line of Kroger Cage-Free Eggs Coming This Fall

KrogerKroger (NYSE:KR) is making moves to encourage consumers to spend on cage-free eggs.

The term refers to eggs produced by chicken who are not penned in cages where they experience harsh conditions that don’t allow them to develop properly for the sheer purpose of making them produce eggs. Kroger — which already carries some cage-free eggs — is launching a new line of these products that will be more affordable.

The eggs will be sold under the Kroger brand “Cage-Free Eggs,” which is part of its organic and humane lines Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic. The new price tag on these food items will encourage consumers to look in the cage-free section of eggs rather than your typical dozen.

Kroger is a leader in the movement, announcing back in March that it will only carry eggs that are cage-free. As things currently stand, 15% of eggs sold by the company are cage-free, while the industry average stands at 9%.

The movement to sell cage-free eggs in grocery stores and restaurants nationwide has been on a hot streak within the last year or so, with the likes of Supervalu (NYSE:SVU) and Taco Bell (NYSE:YUM) opting to only carry these humane products by 2025 and December 2016 respectively.

Other companies that have made similar pledges include McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD) and Krispy Kreme (NYSE:KDD), which will only offer cage-free eggs within the next 10 years apiece.

KR stock is up 0.3% Tuesday.
