National Taco Day 2016: Deals From Taco Bell, Chevys, Qdoba

Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, is National Taco Day and several restaurants are offering special deals and promotions to celebrate.

Yum! Brands, Inc.’s (NYSE:YUM) Taco Bell is celebrating National Taco Day with greeting cards. The greeting cards can be sent to family and friends via various social media platforms and in text messages. However, it doesn’t appear that the chain is offering any special promotions for the holiday.

Chevys Fresh Mex locations in Clifton and Lunden, NJ will be holding a special contest on National Taco Day. Customers are tasked with finishing a four-pound taco in less than 30 minutes. Those that complete the task will be awarded free tacos for one year.

Qdoba Mexican Eats, which is owned by Jack in the Box Inc. (NASDAQ:JACK), is offering a free drink or an order of chips and salsa on National Taco Day. However, this offer requires that the customer signs up for its Qdoba Rewards loyalty program, reports Inquisitr.

National Taco Day was first celebrated in 2009. This makes it one of the younger holidays used by restaurants to promote their goods. It’s also unknown who exactly started the holiday or why. The hashtag “#NationalTacoDay” is used to celebrate the event on social media websites.

According to NationalTacoDay.com, Americans ate more than 4.5 billion tacos. This would weigh as much as two Empire State Buildings. The site also claims that the word taco originated in the 18th century. It’s believed that is was used by workers in silver mines to describe a small explosive. These explosives were pieces of paper wrapped around gunpowder.

Oct. 4 is also National Vodka Day.
