Domino’s Pizza, Inc. (DPZ) Ditches Plan for Pizza Delivery by Reindeer

Domino’s Pizza, Inc.’s (NYSE:DPZ) reindeer games in Japan are officially over.

However, it ran into various problems while trying to train the reindeer. This included the animals not stopping for deliveries, going the wrong way and shaking off the pizza container. Now the company is moving on to a different delivery method.

Domino’s Pizza, Inc. has introduced special Christmas delivery scooters in Japan to celebrate the season with. These scooters are decked out with antlers and a fluffy tail. It may not be a real reindeer, but it definitely increases the chance that customers will get their orders.

The reindeer delivery program was originally designed to show off Domino’s Pizza, Inc.’s new delivery app. The app uses a GPS signal to track the package and give customers detailed updates on its progress. DPZ even originally pointed out the many advantages of using a reindeer over other forms of delivery, reports NBC News.

A video of the Domino’s Pizza, Inc. reindeer training shows just how much trouble the company was having. While the idea would have surely brightened the faces of kids and customers, it just couldn’t be done.

“It hasn’t been possible to solve the [training] problems that have come up, [so] we reluctantly decided to end the reindeer delivery program,” Domino’s Pizza, Inc.’s Japan division told NBC News. “It has been difficult to control the reindeer.”

DPZ stock was down slightly as of Monday morning.
