General Motors Company has already been testing out its self-driving cars at its Technical Center campus in Warren, Mich. However it is now pushing these tests to the public roads near the facility.

General Motors Company is expanding the scope of its tests for self-driving cars due to the passage of the SAVE Act legislation. This allows for the testing and deployment of self-driving vehicles in the state.

Over the next few months, General Motors Company is planning to expand its tests of self-driving cars to more metro areas in Detroit. The company plans to make this the center of its test and development for self-driving cars in winter conditions.

General Motors Company is also preparing to create its next generation of self-driving cars for tests. The cars will be made at its Orion Township assembly plant. The production of these cars will start early next year.

The self-driving cars that will be made at the Orion Township assembly plant will be made from Chevrolet Bolt EVs. These cars will feature LIDAR, cameras, sensors and other devices to allow for the tests. That plant is already fitted for the production of Chevy Bolt EVs and Sonic vehicles.

“Our autonomous technology will be reliable and safe, as customers have come to expect from any of our vehicles,” Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of General Motors Company, said in a statement.

GM shares were largely unaffected by the self-driving cars announcement
