Apple Inc. (AAPL) iTV Partners with Netflix, ABC and Fox Also Join Up

Here is your daily Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock news and rumors for September 1, 2010. There’s a trifecta of Apple TV items today, with a report that claims Netflix will be partnering with Apple to offer instant streaming video on the new Apple TV. Speaking of the rumored iTV, it looks like the service and iTunes will be getting their 99 cent TV show rentals after all. Finally, a new Apple survey lets the cat out of the bag concerning instant video streaming through iTunes.

Apple and Netflix Partner on Apple TV Service: The new set-top box and streaming television service from Apple Inc. that will re-launch its Apple TV brand will now include programming from video rental giant Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) when it launches later this year according to a report at Bloomberg. This news comes from “three people with knowledge of the plans,” but specifics of Netflix and Apple’s plans weren’t revealed in the report. It’s assumed that, much like Netflix’s app for Apple’s iPod Touch, iPhone 4, and iPad, Apple TV’s version of the service would allow existing Netflix subscribers to stream video through the device on their television. The question is whether or not the two companies will offer any exclusive features through their partnership. Netflix currently offers living room video streaming through videogame consoles like the Sony (NYSE: SNE) Playstation 3, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox 360, and Nintendo (PINK: NTDOY) Wii.

ABC and Fox to Offer 99 cent TV Show Rentals through Apple: Just yesterday, it looked Apple’s plans to offer 99 cent television rentals through iTunes and their new television service weren’t going to come to fruition. Unless, of course, Rupert Murdoch convinced News Corp (NASDAQ: NWS) to sign on by offering Fox programming through the service. Today, News Corp’s own Wall Street Journal is reporting that both Disney (NYSE: DIS) and its ABC network and News Corp.’s  Fox have signed on to offer 99 cent rentals of programming through Apple’s services. The Journal cites “people familiar with the matter” as their source for confirmation of these deals. Apple is expected to announce these partnerships at today’s media event in San Francisco.

Instant iTunes Video Streaming on iPad, According to Apple Survey: AOL (NYSE: AOL) tech blog Engadget got word from a reader that Apple has sent out a survey to iTunes users that seems to confirm that instant video streaming through that service will be coming to the iPad. One question in the survey reads, “What are the primary reasons for your satisfaction with the video content you’ve purchased or rented from iTunes and watched on the iPad?” Amidst the ten selectable reasons below is an option that reads, “Titles are available to watch instantly.” Considering that there is no such option currently available on any platform supporting iTunes, the survey is either a flub on the part of Apple’s market research partners or confirmation of many rumors about possible announcements at today’s media event.
