5 Durable Goods Stocks in Need of Repair

Consumer spending is weak, and that means more folks are putting off big ticket purchases like plasma TVs or refrigerators. It just doesn’t make much sense to spend four figures on a pretty, new machine when you may lose your job — or if you rent and the landlord is in charge of appliances.

I watch more than 5,000 publicly traded companies with my Portfolio Grader tool, ranking companies by a number of fundamental and quantitative measures, and this week, I’ve got 5 durable goods stocks that aren’t so durable.

Here they are, in alphabetical order. Each one of these stocks gets a “D” or “F” according to my research, meaning it is a “sell” or “strong sell.”

Mohawk Industries Inc. (NYSE:MHK) produces floor covering products used for both residential and commercial settings. MHK stock is down 15%, year-to-date.

Newell Rubbermaid Inc. (NYSE:NWL) operates a wide range of consumer brands including Rubbermaid, Paper Mate and Sharpie, among others. Year-to-date, NWL stock is down 29% compared to a loss of 2% for the Dow Jones.

Panasonic Corp. (NYSE:PCS) is a wireless telecommunications provider with service in the United States. PCS stock has been anything but durable in 2011, down 30%, year-to-date.

Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) is known worldwide for its wide variety of consumer electronic products including televisions, cameras, audio videos, semiconductors, batteries and other products. A drop of 43% since the start of 2011 has shareholders questioning their buy.

Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE:WHR) has gained international fame for its line of laundry appliances, refrigerators, cooking appliances, dishwashers and other home appliances. While it may be a household name, WHR stock is down 38% since the start of January.
