5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

For the week, the worst sectors according to Portfolio Grader are the reit, independent power and renewable electricity producers, metals and mining, water utilities and energy services sectors.

With 74% of its stocks (125 out of 169) rated “sell,” the reit sector is struggling this week. Hatteras Financial (HTS), DDR Corp. (DDR) and Health Care REIT, Inc. (HCN) are pushing the sector down with F grades. Hatteras Financial is the worst performer in this sector, with a 28.5% decline in the last 12 months.

The independent power and renewable electricity producers sector is trailing behind others this week, with 70% of its stocks (7 out of 10) rated a “sell”. Among independent power and renewable electricity producers stocks, TransAlta Corporation (TAC), Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. Sponsored ADR (EOC) and Calpine Corporation (CPN) are lingering near the bottom with grades of F. Overall, TransAlta Corporation is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 53.3% in the last 12 months.

The metals and mining sector is dragging, with 69% of its stocks (62 out of 90) rated a “sell”. With an overall grade of F, Newmont Mining Corporation (NEM), Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR (GFI) and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. Class A (SCHN) are weighing down the sector. Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR is performing worst overall in the sector, with a 71% decline over the last 12 months.

The water utilities sector is lagging this week with 67% of its stocks (4 out of 6) rated a “sell”. Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR (SBS), SJW Corp. (SJW) and Aqua America, Inc. (WTR) are dragging down the sector overall, each earning a low grade of D. The worst performer in this sector is Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR, which saw its price sink 87.8% in the last 12 months.

The energy services sector looks weak, with 61% of its stocks (41 out of 67) rated a “sell”. Out of the energy services stocks, McDermott International, Inc. (MDR), ION Geophysical Corporation (IO) and Tidewater (TDW) are near the bottom with F’s. Over the last 12 months, McDermott International, Inc. is the worst performer in this sector, with a 74.6% decline.
