Douglas Tompkins — co-founder of North Facehas passed away at age 72.

  • The Ohio native died Tuesday in a kayaking accident in Southern Chile. Here are five things to know about him:
  • Tompkins was born in Ohio in 1943 and grew up in Millbrook, N.Y., becoming a ski racer, rock climber and alpinist.
  • His first contribution to the outdoors was in 1963 when he founded the California Mountaineering Guide Service.
  • He co-founded North Face in San Francisco in 1964, initially selling rock climbing and camping equipment.
  • In 1968, Tompkins co-founded Esprit with his wife, a female apparel and accessories store.
  • He was also a major conservationist, initiating a number of projects including Pumalin Park in Chile and The Ibera Project in Argentina.
